Orthopedic Surgery Q & A

Why Would I Need Orthopedic Surgery?

With the advent of minimally invasive surgical techniques, orthopedic surgery is no longer the long haul it once was. The surgeons at Orthocenter routinely perform the following surgeries to help relieve pain and restore function, quickly and effectively:

  • Hand and wrist surgeries
  • Meniscus tears
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears
  • Achilles tendon ruptures
  • Spine surgery
  • Carpal tunnel surgery
  • Knee replacement
  • Hip replacement
  • Rotator cuff repair

This list isn’t comprehensive, but it should give you an idea of the breadth and scope of the surgical expertise at Orthocenter.

What is Arthroscopy?

More often than not, the surgeons at Orthocenter turn to arthroscopic techniques to diagnose and treat orthopedic problems. In fact, the term arthroscopy comes from two Greek words: arthro, which means “joint;” and skopein, which means “look.”

Using a tiny camera and a light mounted on a specialized instrument, your surgeon makes only small incisions. The arthroscope is threaded through an incision to get a better look inside your joint. With arthroscopy, your surgeon can better visualize the area in order to definitively diagnose your joint problem. With this close-up view, which the surgeon sees in real time on an adjacent video monitor, they’re not only able to identify your problem but often treat it as well.

To do this, they thread small instruments through another small incision and guide the work using the video monitor. With this technique, your surgeon can:

  • Repair or resect torn cartilage
  • Repair torn ligaments
  • Reconstruct ligaments
  • Release tendons
  • Remove loose bone and cartilage
  • Remove inflamed tissue (often the synovium)

Whenever possible, the surgeons at Orthocenter turn to arthroscopy to solve most of your joint issues.

What are the Benefits of Arthroscopy?

It wasn’t long ago that joint repair meant open surgery to allow surgeons better access and visualization of your joint. With arthroscopy, your surgeon makes only tiny incisions, which means you reap the following benefits:

  • Shorter recovery time
  • Less collateral tissue damage
  • Less blood loss
  • Reduced risk of infection

And perhaps the best benefit is that the orthopedic surgeons perform many of these surgeries on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home the same day as your surgery.
