Hand & Wrist

Your hands and wrists are some of the most active parts of your body, responsible for everything from fine motor skills to heavy lifting. Beneath every motion is a complex structure of bones, tendons, and soft tissues working in perfect sync. Because they’re so essential and used constantly, even minor injuries or conditions can have a big impact on your daily routine. When pain or stiffness starts to interfere, it’s important to turn to a specialist who understands the intricacies of hand and wrist function.

Hand Injuries & Conditions

Fractures (Broken Bones)

Breaks in the bones of the hand, such as metacarpals or phalanges; often caused by falls, crush injuries, or direct blows.

Dislocations

Bones in a joint are forced out of alignment, often at the fingers or thumb due to trauma.

Sprains

Ligament injuries caused by overstretching or tearing, common in the fingers or wrist.

Tendon Lacerations

Cuts that sever tendons, often resulting in inability to move a finger or thumb.

Flexor/Extensor Tendon Injuries

Damage to tendons that allow finger flexing or extending, often due to trauma or lacerations.

Crush Injuries

Occur when the hand is compressed by a heavy object; can involve bone, muscle, and nerve damage.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Compression of the median nerve in the wrist; causes numbness, tingling, and weakness in the thumb and fingers.

Ulnar Nerve Entrapment (Cubital Tunnel Syndrome)

Compression of the ulnar nerve, often at the elbow or wrist; leads to numbness and weakness in the ring and little fingers.

Mallet Finger

Rupture of the extensor tendon at the fingertip, causing the tip to droop.

Jersey Finger

Tear of the flexor tendon, usually when grabbing a jersey in sports; results in inability to bend the fingertip.

Radial Nerve Palsy

Damage to the radial nerve, often causing wrist drop and weakness in hand extension.

Osteoarthritis

Wear-and-tear of cartilage in hand joints; causes stiffness, pain, and deformity.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Autoimmune inflammation of joints; often affects hands symmetrically with pain, swelling, and joint damage.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Inflammation of tendons on the thumb side of the wrist; causes pain during gripping or thumb movement.

Trigger Finger (Stenosing Tenosynovitis)

Tendon sheath thickens, causing the finger to catch or lock in a bent position.

Ganglion Cyst

Fluid-filled lump often on the back of the wrist or hand; can be painless or cause discomfort.

Dupuytren’s Contracture

Thickening of tissue in the palm, leading to finger flexion and limited extension.

Swan Neck Deformity

Characterized by hyperextension of the PIP joint and flexion of the DIP joint, often from arthritis.

Boutonnière Deformity

Opposite of swan neck: flexion of PIP joint and hyperextension of DIP joint.

Hand Infections (e.g., Paronychia, Felon, Tenosynovitis)

Bacterial infections in the hand or fingers; may require antibiotics or surgical drainage.

Wrist Injuries & Conditions

Wrist Sprain

Stretching or tearing of the ligaments in the wrist, usually due to a fall or sudden twist.

Wrist Fracture

A break in one or more of the bones in the wrist, commonly the distal radius (Colles’ fracture).

Scaphoid Fracture

A break in the scaphoid bone, a small bone on the thumb side of the wrist, often from a fall on an outstretched hand.

TFCC Tear (Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex)

A tear in the cartilage structure that supports the small bones of the wrist on the ulnar (pinky) side.

Dislocation

Bones in the wrist are forced out of their normal position, often involving the lunate or capitate bones.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Compression of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel, leading to numbness and tingling in the hand.

Tendonitis (Tenosynovitis)

Inflammation of the wrist tendons or the sheath surrounding them, often from repetitive motion.

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis

Inflammation of the tendons at the base of the thumb, causing pain during thumb or wrist movement.

Ganglion Cyst

A fluid-filled lump on or near the wrist joint or tendons, typically benign but sometimes painful.

Kienböck’s Disease

A condition where the lunate bone loses blood supply, leading to bone death (avascular necrosis) and arthritis.

Arthritis (Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Joint inflammation causing pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion in the wrist.

Intersection Syndrome

Inflammation where wrist tendons cross over each other, often seen in athletes or repetitive wrist use.
